Today I noticed a noise coming from my engine when I rev my 1995 Savage. I read all the postings below about noises and nothing seems fitting to my situation.
When I rev it, I hear the normal engine firing (which sounds great) and some light tapping. I guess I'll look at the valves sometime soon for that. The tapping isn't a problem for me now.
The sound that is concerning me is a "clanking metal" or "slight rattling" noise. It sounds like something is going on in there. When it's idling, I don't hear the noise. It's only happening when I rev (higher rpm). I notice it when I'm stopped or the bike is warming up. This is a new noise, I think I would have noticed it before if it has always been there.
Maybe it's a piece of the bike rattling and I haven't found the culprit yet, but could it something else in the motor/transmission?
Some facts that may help you diagnose:
-bike has 2700 mi. on it. The first 1600 miles happened between 1995 and 2002. I put 1100 miles on it over the past few months.
-it is running great; it idles, accelerates, and shifts fine.
-I've changed the oil twice since Sept., once last Oct. and once about 3 weeks ago. Current oil level appears perfect.
The bike's running great, I just don't want to ignore it without checking with you all. The knowledge here at this forum on the Savage is amazing.
Thanks.
-Jon
